![]() ![]() The most important thing to note here is that AGGRO DR1FT, lensed by French cinematographer Arnaud Potier ( Galveston), was shot with a process transforming every image into trippy infrared footage, like a kaleidoscope of pixelated colors. That’s all there is to it - and even that plot doesn’t matter in a work that more or less eschews plot altogether to focus on pure visual and sonic sensations, certainly to the detriment of anyone looking for a good story. The plot is actually rather movie-ish, or video game-ish, or both, following a Miami-based hitman named Bo (played by actor Jordi Mollà, also starring in Olmo Schnabel’s Venice-bound Pet Shop Days), who needs to take out an evil big boss (Joshua Tilley) before the boss gets to him first. Then again, Korine isn’t trying to sell movie tickets or streaming subscriptions - he’s just making the art he always has. Whether or not it crosses over to the gamers, TikTokkers and technology-obsessed kids it seems to cater to is another matter. Premiering in Venice, where it played out of competition, AGGRO DR1FT (what does that even mean?) could appeal to diehard fans of the director, who are most likely in his age group (he’s 50 now). It certainly hasn’t been seen before in feature-length form, at least outside of a gallery. Korine calls this new style “gamecore,” which, well, why not. Venue: Venice Film Festival (Out of Competition) ![]() Everything since - from his irreverent feature debut Gummo (which The New York Times deemed “the worst film of the year”) to the Dogme 95-certified Julien Donkey-Boy to his Jackass-like Trash Humpers to the tripped-out Florida-set heist flick Spring Breakers and bizarro Matthew McConaughey vehicle The Beach Bum - has been an experiment of one kind or another. It’s not an understatement to say that his script for Larry Clark’s Kids, which he penned at age 18, is the most conventional thing in his whole filmography. ![]() I wish MST3K were still around, they'd have a hoot with this series.Of the many directors to emerge during indie cinema’s heyday in the 90s, Harmony Korine probably remains the most iconoclastic. Will you suddenly jump from the classroom to fighting alien battle cruisers? Will you jump from a sex scene in the dorm to some distant planet and a sub plot that leaves you wondering what the heck this has to do with the show? Or will you jump from deep space back to the school bar, just like that, and with no transporter technology! Seriously, it's THAT bad. On the positive side, it might make a great drinking game show, trying to guess where the bizarre plot jumps will whiplash you next. This show steals from everyone - it's as if you lifted the most obvious memes from Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Gallactica, and The Fifth Element - and threw them into a blender with The Man from UNCLE, Saved By the Bell, and Beverly Hills 90120. Not to mention the incessant PC lecturing and virtue signalling jammed awkwardly into the dialog. An epic fail on just about every aspect you can think of - disjointed plot, unlikable characters, inane dialog, random costuming, 1960-worthy special effects, and dirt cheap sets. Like a grisly road accident that you can't tear your eyes from no matter how hard you want to. And then there are those that leave you in stunned disbelief. Or this viewer, and I am sure others, will turn the channel. PANDORA… become more interesting, creative, offer impressive dialogue and character development. Otherwise, this show, hopefully, will face its demise. Season 2 will prove if this show can move more towards intelligent adult viewership and much, much better writing. A young child watching these kids have sex with one another sends a bad message, sex isn't necessary for a successful show. Teenage sex, tantrums, bad lines and terrible acting. I've tried numerous time to watch this program, but it is geared for the immature. To think these kids communicate with adults, or moreover, the adults sharing information, or reacting immature as well, Is unrealistic… Syfy or not. The characters are immature, reminds me of "After Life", which is another program that has potential, but only if the teenage rhetoric and behavior is eliminated. There's no need to dumb down a program, nor have teenagers running amok the galaxy. This show has potential, but for now, it is too juvenile. ![]()
